PalMusic is delighted to be a partner of Transport for London’s (TfL’s) Art on the Underground ‘Radio Underground’ project, which launched on Monday 15 July at London Waterloo Underground Station and runs until Sunday 28 July. It can be heard on the moving walkway connecting the Northern and Jubilee lines.

‘Radio Underground’ is a new sound artwork by London-based artist Joe Namy. The 10-minute soundscape, comprising music and spoken word can be heard at Waterloo and across the rest of the London Underground via a QR code.

Original music for the installation has been composed and performed by flautist Wissam Boustany and oud player Saied Silbak. The other project partners are Sister Midnight, a cooperative community radio station in south London, and Colour Factory, a live music venue and nightclub in Hackney.

Joe Namy works across mediums in sound, performance, radio and video. ‘Radio Underground’ continues Namy’s interest in the politics of listening, music and translation. The work creates a space to find solidarity, for culture and community to express resilience and an understanding of the power music holds. Echoing the style of a radio broadcast, the resulting soundscape is a call to listen to new rhythms as well as to each other, to shared interconnections and collective power.
