PalMusic UK statement about Shireen Abu Akleh
Today, we join millions around the world mourning the death of journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh, and express our shock at the violent attack on her funeral procession.
We extend our sympathies to Palestinians everywhere but particularly to her family and friends.
These events took place just a few days before the date Palestinians mark their ‘Nakba’, their Catastrophe. The 15th May is when Palestinians commemorate the loss of their homes, their land and, all too often, their loved ones.
We at PalMusic UK (Friends of Edward Said National Conservatory of Music) do whatever we can to support the lives on young Palestinians through music. Music brings so much joy and hope, it helps strengthen a community when resilience is low. Culture is vital to creating the bonds that keep a nation together and provides the bridge to reach out to other communities and nations.
We will continue to do all we can to support Palestinian communities through our shared love of music, and our continued love for Palestinian children and young people – the future generation of musicians, journalists, teachers, and leaders. May their path be easier than that of their parents, grandparents, and great grandparents.
