Iyad Sughayer
On 8th November 2018 Palmusic UK celebrated Iyad Sughayer’s early success in what promises to be a brilliant carrier ahead.
In February 2018 Iyad had been awarded the prestigious Trinity Laban Gold Medal Award, and just the day before the recital he had won the 2018 Hannah Brooke Piano Prize which is given to “the most advanced pianist at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance”.
At a sell-out concert at Conway Hall, Iyad guided us through an exciting and varied musical journey beginning with his delicate performance of Mozart Sonata no. 8 in A Minor, followed by Chopin Mazurkas op. 33, culminating with a “transcendental performance” of Khatchaturian’s 1961 Sonata that left the audience in awe.
As Christopher Axworthy (The Keyboard Charitable Trust) beautifully wrote
“Here was all the verve and drive of a young lion. Not only. But with a sense of colour and contrast that had ignited this young man’s imagination and that he transmitted to an audience mesmerised and overwhelmed by such authority“.

Following the recital, Wissam Boustany (a trustee of Palmusic UK) initiated an illuminating discussion with Iyad, bringing in as well the views of the enchanted audience. During the Q&A session Iyad shared with us some insight of his youthful musical journey and aspirations.
He also announced the preparation of his first recording of the full piano repertoire of Khachaturian on the prestigious BIS Label Records.

The discussion was enriched by the extraordinary presence and contribution of John Leech, founder of the The Keyboard Charitable Trust, who emphasised the importance of supporting young people to access music education and pursue a musical career.
